Christkindlmarkt München

This afternoon, we decided to head downtown to the Christmas market. Every year, over 140 huts are put up in the center of Munich and filled with various handcrafts, candles and ornaments for christmas trees. Even if you are not in the mood for shopping, the Glühwein (warm mulled red wine), lebkuchen (gingerbread), bratwurst’l and every sort of sweet that you can imagine are enough reason to head out of the house to take a look…

München 1 – München 0

FC Bayern vs TSV 1860FC Bayern vs TSV 1860FC Bayern vs TSV 1860FC Bayern vs TSV 1860

This afternoon, we went to Das Derby – the match between München’s FC Bayern and TSV 1860. These tickets were the last part of my birthday gift from my colleagues, and Stefan and Christiane were there as well to enjoy the match. FC Bayern won the league championships 4 times in the last 6 years (if I can remember my facts) and even though they are in 4th place place right now, they played like they are still number one, beating TSV 1860 1 to 0.

Things are different at a German soccer game in comparison to an American game: the match is much more active, there are more aerial moves and there are less pauses in the game play. More importantly, the crowd of 69000 people actually were focused on the game – not picking fights with others in the crowd. Oh, and the beer: half liters for only 3 Euros.
Afterwards, we decided that instead of braving the crowds at the U-Bahn, we would stop by at one of the kiosks for a glühwein (mulled hot red wine) while everyone cleared out of the subway station. Truly, a great end to a birthday.

Can you smell how evil it is?

Toilet paper.
It’s one of those things we just sort of take for granted in life. We find our favorite brand and our favorite color and aside from requirements to buy an “emergency roll” because your brand is out, we stick with it. People are more loyal to their preferred tissue than to their favorite cigarettes or beer.

It becomes so familiar that after getting the same rolls over and over and over, you can just glance at the rack of paper, sense the right packaging, grab it off of shelf and be happy knowing that you will have comfort in your moment of need.

My name’s Avery, and I am a Charmin Comfort man. White as the driven snow.

Only this time, my Charmin betrayed me.

Oh, yes, it looked like my normal Charmin, sitting there in the cabinet. Just a normal 8 pack of toilet paper… and look, a some holly and a wreath on the packaging. Even the toilet paper is getting into the holiday season! Except… why do I smell cinnamon and nutmeg and something that for the life of me smells like Egg Nog every time I open the cabinet?

Christmas scented toilet paper.

Right next to the holly sprig… “Winterduft”. Winter scent. I didn’t even know the season had an official aroma, but obviously I was wrong. Winter smells like a fruitcake and now my ass smells like like it too.

Still, I guess it’s better than some of the more creative scents they could have come up with. Autoduft – diesel fumes and car exhaust… Schweinbratenduft – with the tantalizing smell of pork and potato dumplings… or the more exotic Curryduft – like an Indian restaurant at the end of the shift.

Now if you will excuse me, I have an urge to make some gingerbread.

Seriously. In the oven, you sickos.

Heavy Petting…

So, in good news, the cat seems to be getting much better. She’s stronger, the weight is coming back slowly, and she is much more energetic. She’s cleaning herself, jumping onto tables and in most ways, she is like a normal cat again. Well, as normal as she ever was at least.

However, one result of the time we spent nursing her back to health is that she is now very… well… clingy. Before she got sick, she was pretty indifferent when it came to us. She would come over, want the occasional scratch, and that was it. Now, she won’t leave my side. Anywhere I sit, if there is a centimeter of space where she can squeeze in next to me, she’s there. Meowing to be pet… even if I was petting her for a full half hour before that. And if I have to stop petting her to type on the computer or answer the phone, she’s clawing my arm until I start petting her again.

I guess she’s trying to thank me in her own sort of way…

13 Okt 2003 – Bolzano, Italy

Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy Bolzano, Italy

My mother was in town for a few days and since she had never been to Italy before, we decided to take the 2.5 hour drive over the alps to Bolzano in the Alto Adige. The area is very interesting. In some ways, it is very, very Italian. In other ways, you can feel the effect of their German heritage as well (the region has been part of Bavaria, Austria and now Italy over the past 200 years). The residents are bilingual, the local brewery has just as much patrons at their restaurant as the wine pubs do. But the gelato is Italian, no doubt about it…
