RENT HITS THE LOWER HAIGHT

Last night, while sitting at the Toronado, our local bar, Janet spotted a poster for our favorite musical: RENT. RENT is coming to San Francisco next March, Usually, the posters for the upcoming musicals first show up in the trendy neighborhoods, like the Marina. They don't ever bring posters for upcoming shows to the Mission or the Lower Haight. However, I guess their strategy for RENT has changed, because as of this weekend, they have hit the Lower Haight, placing posters in a number of restaurants and bars.

The story of RENT is about a group of artists, singers and bohemians who live in Alphabet City, a neighborhood in New York City that's similar to the Lower Haight. It's fitting that the producers picked my neighborhood as one of the key neighborhoods to advertise to. At least they acknowledge that even though the typical Lower Haight resident may never see a musical in his or her lifetime, they should know about this show… because it's probably the only major musical that will ever attempt to tell their story.

Now that's certainly worth a smirk.
